This article presents a comprehensive review of the literature on the impact of hydropower electricity generation, assessing its environmental, economic and social effects over time. Based on the SALSA method, the review begins with a description of the basic principles of hydropower, including the harnessing of water flow for electricity production and the historical evolution of hydropower technologies. Environmental impacts are explored, such as the alteration of aquatic ecosystems, modification of river flow patterns, and effects on biodiversity. It discusses how large dams can cause extensive flooding and displace communities, as well as efforts to mitigate these effects through sustainable management practices. In economic terms, the article reviews hydropower's ability to provide a stable and continuous source of electricity, reduce long-term operating costs and foster regional development. In addition to the review, a case study of hydropower electricity generation is presented, detailing the elements and the process that must be followed to achieve this type of energy. It concludes with recommendations for future research and practice, highlighting the need to balance energy production with environmental preservation and the well-being of affected communities.
