This article addresses the corrective maintenance and repowering of obsolete consumer electronics equipment, using affordable technologies to extend its useful life and improve its functionality. Two case studies are studied: the modernization of a cassette radio by integrating a Bluetooth module and the conversion of a monitor into a smart TV using a TV Box.
For both devices, recycled and inexpensive components were used, such as a cell phone charger for the radio and an HDMI to VGA adapter for the monitor, keeping costs low and ensuring the viability of the project. In the cassette radio, the addition of Bluetooth allowed users to connect mobile devices wirelessly, transforming obsolete equipment into one compatible with current technologies. In the monitor, the use of the TV Box made it possible to turn it into a Smart TV with multimedia content streaming capability.
The results obtained show that, through corrective maintenance and repowering, it is possible to extend the useful life of electronic equipment at a low cost, reducing the generation of electronic waste. In addition, it is highlighted that upgrading these devices offers additional value in terms of functionality and technological utility. This approach promotes sustainability and demonstrates that the reuse of obsolete equipment is a viable and affordable alternative for users.
